Town Origin

Once a part of Gilmanton called Gunstock Parish, this town was named for a key battle at the end of the revolution, the Battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina. The American forces managed to deplete Cornwallis's army so they were forced to retreat, leading to the surrender at Yorktown. Sargent Lemuel B. Mason, who fought in that battle, had retired to Gunstock Parish. As the town's oldest citizen when it was incorporated in 1812, Sargent Mason had the honor of selecting a name, and he chose Gilford. North Carolina's Guilford Court House has long since been renamed Martinsville.

AKWA MARINA

Akwa Marina Beach Bar is a fun lakeside gazebo, that blurs the line between the lake and the Caribbean islands. The large post and beam pavilion and the Anona Boat Bar is a must see.

The Beach Bar is open to the public and can be access by Car, Boat, PWC or foot. The rest of Akwa Marina including the beach and pool are for members only. We have ample parking on Scenic Drive. If you are coming by boat you are welcome to dock anywhere all along the outside of the docking facility, or drop anchor and swim up. If you are coming by PWC there is a shallow sandy area near our Kayak rack just North of the docks. This will allow easier egress to and from your PWC.

LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE

New Hampshire’s largest and most famous lake, Winnipesaukee has been a tourist destination for more than a century. The Native American name for the lake means either “smile of the Great Spirit” or “beautiful water in a high place.” The third largest body of water in New England, it is surrounded by three mountain ranges. The wooded shoreline and crystal clear water of this spring-fed lake make it a popular summer destination. It is one of the best lake trout and salmon fishing waters in New England, and is ringed with numerous villages and towns that offer everything from boardwalks and water slides to public beaches and art galleries. All communities have public parks and docks.

WINNIPESAUKEE SPORTSMAN CLUB

The Winnipesaukee Sportsman's Club was formed in 1969 by a group of locals interested in hunting and fishing. The 18 acres of land off NH 109 in Moultonborough was acquired from Bud Ambrose. At a later date a small building was purchased which became the club house. We now own 27 acres, a lot of this is wet land, but we have enough to expand a little. Most all work done at the range is volunteer. Shooting is allowed 9AM to sunset Monday through Saturday and 11AM to sunset on Sunday.
