Lifestyle Attractions in Moultonborough

A Lakeside Haven

Moultonborough is an idyllic, rural community set on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake. Settled in 1777, among the first settlers were sixteen Moultons which gave the town its name. It is a sought-after Lakes Region town due to its location and its low tax rate. The waterfront here runs for more than 70 miles, more than any other town on Lake Winnipesaukee. The town offers tennis courts, a golf course, camping facilities, bicycle trails, historic homes, snowmobile trails, and public boat launches. Come winter, ice fishing, skating, and hockey are popular activities.

Castle

In The Sky

Owned and operated by Castle Preservation Society since 2006, Lucknow is open to the public for guests to enjoy. Revel in the spectacular views while taking in the magnificent features Tom Plant had installed in his home. Enjoy a self-guided tour as if time stood still in the early 1900s. Search for the innovations of the time – central vacuuming, ammonia brine refrigeration, intercom systems. Castle in the Clouds offers tours of the historic 1914 mansion, on-site dining at The Carriage House Restaurant, community programs and events, rental space for weddings and private events, horseback riding at the nearby Riding in the Clouds, and access to 28 miles of walking or hiking trails with waterfalls.

The Old

Country Store

This store is among the oldest in the country and also one of the oldest surviving businesses of any kind. It has been the scene of town meetings in the early 1800's, and again in the 1900's; the library; post office for over 100 years; and a stage stop. A beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, its wraparound porch and red shutters welcome you as you step back in time. It’s hard to take it all in – the creaking wood floors, the pickle barrel, the candy counter, the back rooms and nooks … here you’ll find everything from kitchen gadgets to aged cheddar. Upstairs there is a small museum full of local history. A true old-fashioned general store, this is a must-see in the Lakes Region.

The Loon

Center

The Loon Center, located on the north shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, was built as the new headquarters of the Loon Preservation Committee in 1993. In addition to staff offices, public meeting rooms and a research laboratory, The Loon Center houses exhibits, displays and a gift shop, with all proceeds from the store benefitting LPC’s Loon Recovery Program. Interpretive exhibits, presentations, and nature trails on the 200 acre wildlife sanctuary (including over 5,000 feet of pristine shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee), give visitors an introduction to the natural environment of New Hampshire and promote a greater understanding of loons and the natural world.
