"Ice-Out" on Lake Winnipesaukee, located in New Hampshire, is a significant event marking the official end of winter and the beginning of spring. It refers to the moment when the ice covering the lake melts enough that the M/S Mount Washington, a historic ship, can safely navigate between its ports without encountering ice.

For over 135 years, this event is eagerly anticipated by locals and tourists alike, as it signals the start of warmer weather and the opening of the lake for recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. The exact date of Ice-Out varies from year to year depending on weather conditions, but it typically occurs in late March or early April.  Ice-Out is declared by an observer in a small plane from Emerson Aviation.

Many wagers are made on when Ice-Out will be declared including “bragging rights” through the “official” Ice-Out page found at Winnipesaukee.com.  Guesses are submitted from February 1st through February 28th with the winner being announced and posted on their web page.

“Ice Out” gives the communities a sense of spring and excitement knowing that the warmer weather is coming.
