Lake Winnisquam Area

About The Area

Set in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, Lake Winnisquam offers a rare blend of natural beauty, privacy, and understated luxury. Spanning approximately 4,200 acres with over 30 miles of shoreline, it is the fourth-largest lake entirely within the state. Known for its quieter, more relaxed atmosphere compared to nearby Lake Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam provides a more private and peaceful lakefront experience while still delivering exceptional boating, deep water, and year-round recreation.

With depths reaching up to 155 feet, the lake supports a rich and diverse ecosystem and is part of the greater Lakes Region watershed, ultimately connecting to the Merrimack River. Positioned among Belmont, Laconia, and Tilton—and just minutes from Meredith—it offers both seclusion and convenient access to dining, shopping, and local amenities.

ICONIC FEATURE

One of the most iconic features of Lake Winnisquam is the presence of the Common Loon, a defining symbol of New Hampshire’s lakes. Each year, multiple loon pairs return to nest along the shoreline or on protected floating platforms. Their chicks are able to swim within hours of hatching and are often seen riding on their parents’ backs. The haunting, echoing call of the loon carries across the water, creating a timeless and unmistakable lakefront atmosphere. These remarkable birds are also powerful divers, capable of reaching depths of over 200 feet in search of fish.

WILDLIFE

Beyond loons, the lake is abundant in wildlife. Bald eagles nest along the shoreline, while ospreys and great blue herons are frequently seen fishing in the shallows. Beneath the surface, the lake supports both cold- and warm-water fish species, including lake trout, landlocked salmon, smallmouth and largemouth bass, yellow perch, and crappie. Occasional sightings of otters, turtles, and other native wildlife further enhance the natural character of the lake, making it one of the more ecologically diverse environments in the region.

RECREATION

This balance of recreation and preservation is part of what makes Winnisquam so unique. Conservation efforts throughout the watershed help maintain water quality, protect wildlife habitats, and preserve the lake’s natural shoreline. Nearby, Ahern State Park offers protected land, walking trails, and untouched scenery—enhancing the sense of privacy and connection to nature.

WHY LAKE WINNISQUAM?

Lake Winnisquam has quietly emerged as a destination for refined lakefront living, where expansive shoreline, peaceful coves, and natural beauty define the experience. Daily life on the lake centers around boating, paddleboarding, swimming, and exceptional fishing, while winter transforms the area into a four-season destination for ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Enhancing this already exceptional setting is The Lake Estate on Winnisquam, a newly introduced luxury waterfront resort offering refined accommodations, spa experiences, waterfront dining, and curated amenities—bringing a sophisticated lifestyle element to the lake.

Easily accessible via Interstate 93 and within reach of Boston and southern New Hampshire, Lake Winnisquam offers a rare opportunity: expansive, usable water, a more private setting, abundant wildlife, and an evolving luxury presence.

It is a place defined by nature, tranquility, and timeless lakefront living.
